UCP educates, advocates and provides support services to ensure a life without limits for people with a spectrum of disabilities. UCP works to advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of people with disabilities through an affiliate network that has helped many acquire a wheelchair van.
Each State is required to maintain a Statewide Independent Living Council The Council cannot be established as an entity within a State agency, but the free-standing group may or may not be established as a 501(c)3 corporation..
Members of the Council shall be appointed by the Governor. The Governor shall select members after soliciting recommendations from representatives of organizations representing a broad range of individuals with disabilities and organizations interested in individuals with disabilities, within some specific requirements in Title VII of the Rehabilitation Act, section 705.
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) prohibits discrimination and ensures equal opportunity for persons with disabilities in employment, State and local government services, public accommodations, commercial facilities, and transportation. It also mandates the establishment of TDD/telephone relay services. The current text of the ADA includes changes made by the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (P.L. 110-325), which became effective on January 1, 2009. The ADA was originally enacted in public law format and later rearranged and published in the United States Code.
Service members and Veterans may be eligible for a one-time payment of not more than $19,817 toward the purchase of a wheelchair van or other conveyance.
Veteran Administration automobile adaptive equipment (AAE) program permits physically challenged persons to enter, exit, and/or operate a motor vehicle or other conveyance. Wheelchair van conversion benefits range from a few hundred dollars to over a hundred thousand dollars depending on need.
Veteran Administration Compensation Claim process. If you have disabilities, diseases or injuries caused by or aggravated during active military service–no matter when you served–you may be eligible to receive monthly benefits. Once enrolled, benefits may include a benefit for a vehicle purchase and wheelchair van modifications.
